With a deep desire to improve Dallas and earning two Bachelor of Science degrees from Virginia’ McIntire School Commerce, James forged ahead to gain experience in his field of finance. His first position at JPMorgan Chase and Co. in 1984, in financial training, advanced him to take a position with American Express. He managed a $1 billion fixed income fund from 1985 to 1989. James established Highland Capital Management in 1993. The company concentrates in credit hedge funds, credit accounts and private equity accounts. The company’s reputation has grown into being known as one of the largest alternative credit firms in the United States and globally.
As a philanthropist, James is interested in his local Dallas community. His recent project involved restoring the hippopotamus habitat at the Dallas Zoo. He donated $1million to the rebuilding of the habitat. Along with other philanthropists, $14 million was donated to open the new hippo dwelling called Highland Capital Lodge. James stated that Highland Capital Management is interested in the growth of Dallas and its future. As a philanthropist he has donated to the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Institute and the Perot Museum of Natural Science. James is also involved in the Snowball Express and the Uplift Education programs. James has teamed up with Mary Jalonick CEO and President of The Dallas Foundation to further his donations to nonprofit organizations. James now commits over $3 million a year to philanthropic projects to better the Dallas area. Together, James and Mary formed the Highland Dallas Foundation Inc. James has chosen to focus on Dallas and North Texas by helping educational needs, health care concerns, veterans and many civic organizations.
Linda Owen was hired to connect James Dondero with agencies in North Texas who have goals to improve their areas. James would like Highland Capital Management to continue to improve North Dallas and to establish new charitable commitments in local Dallas regions. Linda also organized The Family Place for men and managed to host a Mother’s Day event at the Dallas Zoo to raise funds for residents. James and his investment firm want to give Dallas a bright future.
